(Ah, AI. I can’t wait until you evenly redistribute billionaires moolah into all of our bank accounts as a means of saving the planet…)
Republicans opened their Convention — in the city that the convicted felon and former worst president a country has ever seen called a “shithole” (in so many words, only the best words, mind you) — with the chant, “Fight! Fight! Fight!”
Their gaseous führer was almost killed by an assassin’s bullet which was propelled out of a weapon Republicans insist is for the greater good and should never be banned no matter how many innocent adults, kids, toddlers and zygotes are slaughtered in the process.
Their make-believe deity spared their Dear Leader to demonstrate how righteous the demented wannabe dictator is but, for some reason — and only their unmerciful god knows — struck down a family man and firefighter who got up on the wrong side of the bed, I guess. Collaterally damaged two other unidentified bystanders as well. Spared the man who swims with financial sharks, grabs female genitalia while bragging about it and provokes societal mayhem on a daily basis.
Deities are fickle like that.
But, James, now is not the time to be unforgiving and snarky.
Bullshit it isn’t. Evil doesn’t rest.
Now is no different than any other time because nothing has changed.
The miscreant did choose a vice president and with his selection he has officially doubled down on championing white supremacy and christian nationalism. The mainstream media yawns.
Of course they do.
The man is clicks, eyeballs, hovering mouses. The man favors giving the rich people who own the media tax breaks, favors ripping up regulations, favors hastening the planet’s demise. Billionaires are busy building bunkers around the world in the hopes of riding out whatever chaos might lie ahead. Chaos of which they are each more responsible for than the 8 billion of us who are not obscenely wealthy.
The double-speak from the right is beginning to break my brain. When reading the news or current events, all of us probably feel something like Joe Biden did on the stage opposite the convicted felon. It’s overwhelming.
Laws that are being considered and passed are audaciously mind-blowing.
Statements coming out of the mouths of people who know better are harrowing in their pretzeled logic or sheer mendaciousness.
Left is right. Wet is dry. The sky is whatever I say it is.
The far right want you to give up. They want you to think they are inevitable. But look at the recent elections in the United Kingdom and France. There is most certainly hope.
No matter what is in the news today, it will be ancient history four months from now.
Except…
The corporatists and statists and nationalists and fascists will still be on the march seeking to remove as many of your rights as they can. Their worldview can be found in the searchable Project 2025 document. If you don’t find their idea to replace thousands of government staffers with their own loyalists to be horrifying, you are not thinking it all of the way through, or not thinking about it at all.
The candidate you vote for in November will place his own people at the head of hundreds of government agencies. Government agencies you’ve probably come to count on including the Food & Drug Administration, the U.S. Forest Service, the National Park Service, and on and on. Now imagine he can put his own loyalty-tested flunkies in positions throughout these agencies to be able to place their thumbs on the scale whenever they feel like it.
Think of people like Stephen Miller, Steve Bannon and Roger Stone calling the shots at Immigration and Naturalization.
Know anybody who benefits from unions? They better vote for the lesser of two evils.
Know anybody who needs government assistance? They better vote for the lesser of two evils.
Know anybody without a guaranteed pension who will rely solely on Social Security? They sure as hell better vote for the lesser of two evils.
Know anybody dependent on the Affordable Care Act or Medicare? If so, they better hold their nose and vote for the less stinky candidate.
Need some ideas for where you should send your hard-earned money? Assuming most of us will not be getting off of our duffs to canvass neighborhoods.
I’d send it directly to the Biden/Harris campaign. Skip the middle men.
You could donate to Run for Something. They’re getting candidates to contest seats that normally go uncontested.
The Seneca Project is trying to send out a clarion call to women all over the political spectrum because, of all of our citizens most at risk of losing rights, it’s women who stand to lose the most. Here’s a podcast — Coalition of the Sane — with one of the organizers that explains a little more.
I don’t know about you guys but I’m a “cute little bunny” that’s ready to fight the good fight and save democracy in the process. It was always fated that it was going to come down to a national referendum.
So let’s do it.
Just going to leave this two images at the bottom of the page without comment. Unfortunately, I’m having trouble linking YouTube websites to Substack. It’s either user error or some tech tussle that I’m unaware of. Perhaps next round.
Good one James. I am seeing a revival of enthusiasm in the Dem's interest in the race because of Joe's stepping down. More of a chance now for level-headed thinkers to prevail and lead.
I only favored Biden remaining in the race because I feared and did not believe Democrats would rally so definitively around Kamala. Now that they have - I’m super excited.
The contrast between the GOP and the Democrats grows starker by the day. Those who don’t see that are blinded by their irrational fear of Others.
